This storyline links in with my chosen genre, the theme of the movie is what my group will like to capture.

The movie starts of with a close up of a baby’s face, so we automatically assume this may be linked in with family genre or children’s story. There is fairytale like music soundtrack used this shows elements of fantasy like movie. There is a voice over explaining what is happening this also emphasises on the genre. We get a sense of character when the father is at the hospital and he seems unhappy and grumpy after seeing the baby. It then cuts away to him and his wife we get a long shot of them walking fast this suggests to us that they are in a rush to get away from the baby. We already pick up signs that there maybe some rivalry this seen when the baby is is dumped in the back of the car this shows lack of compassion and security for the baby. The baby is isolated from the family; the son is secured compared to the baby.
As the family pull to the house we get a voice over claiming that the family were not nice people so we get a sense of characters and storyline.

Production title in Blue screen fades to view of ceiling, a light hangs down, and a florescent patthern shawdowed in bright light onto the ceiling, glowing . Moves gently down and across from the top right until it reaches a door slowly coming into the centre of the frame. A subtle daylight highlights through the spaces around the door as the door opens and the room is being slowly revealed, light grows brighter as we move closer toward it. As the door is opening we continue to move forward into the room.

Int. Bedroom. Day
A fairytale like room is revealed to us. Long shot of toys fill the room, shelf of books, table filled with pens, paper and a fairytale book, toys, and children type possessions, fairytale like snow globes, this is shown through a pan, establishing the setting, a bedroom. We look across to the shelf of books; we see a close up of the books. Fairytale books are lined up across the self, some battered some new. We follow on from the right to left as it leaves the pan of books and moves towards the left, going into a pan of a table we see coloured pens scattered on top of a drawing, some few pens have lids off. We then see an open book lying across the corner of the bottom left side of the table, opened in the middle. Moving along past the table. We next see the bed, with a teddy bear on the front right corner of the bed. As we get closer to the foot of the bed LITTLE BLUE walks to the bed side and picks up a blue bag. She walks away and to us is revealed from behind her a picture frame. We look closer to the frame on the bedside table as it closes in on the picture of a family. From left to right we see the FATHER, LITTLE BLUE, and MOTHER and further away STEP SISTER. Then fades to a blue screen. Fades to blue screen and title ‘Little Blue’ appears.

Ext. establishing shot of outside of school

STEP SISTER: Oi! (Throwing a scrunched ball of paper at LITTLE BLUE)

LITTLE BLUE turns around in disappointment; she isn’t shocked, as if this has happened many times.

STEP SISTERS FRIENDS: (2 of them giggling devilishly in amusement, they each stand aside the step sister)

LITTLE BLUE: o go away I haven’t got any lunch money for today.

STEP SISTER: (Toots)
Well you know the drill.

STEP SISTERS FRIENDS approach LITTLE BLUE, STEP SISTER is at the middle front of the two, looking like a leader, and their facial expressions turn bitter and ugly.

STEP SISTER: get her!
(She bares her teeth at LITTLE BLUE)

LITTLE BLUE gasps and runs away from the bullies
Camera tracks LITTLE BLUE running into a valley

Suddenly a noise is heard; sounds of crackling leaves through heavy but slow footsteps get louder. LITTLE BLUE jumps up thinking it’s the bullies, she throws her right foot first to sprint away. A hand touches LITTLE BLUES back.

Whispering with a croaky voice
Old witch: they’re gone, they’re gone

LITTLE BLUE turns around, are settles still.

Tell me, why so blue?

LITTLE BLUE breaks out into a roar of whiney crying and tears.
i-i cant take this no more, she wont stop bullying me, her and all the other mean girls. I don’t know w- w- why (her voice weakens and crumbles down)

OLD WITCH: hush hush child, don’t worry.

…who might these bullies be?

LITTLE BLUE: (looks down) my step sister and her friends

Old witch: oh child..
She gently drops her right hand into her pocket, and slips out 3 pebble sized sweets each wrapped in see-through creased wrappers. All three different colour’s luminous blue, red and yellow.

LITTLE BLUE: (curiously) what’s that?

OLD WITCH: It’s the sweetest thing

LITTLE BLUE, looks at the lady for more answers, her eyes shift side to side

LITTLE BLUE: huh?

OLD WITCH: give it to those horrid girls and horrid they shall be no more.
But… do not eat them, and do not let anyone but the bullies eat them or it will go horribly wrong

LITTLE BLUE: what will go wrong?

OLD WITCH: the magic!

A shuffling of leaves is heard behind blue,
Blue jumps again and turns instinctively, no one is there, she puts her head back to the front. The old lady is gone. In dead silence blue stands alone with three pebble sized sweets lay wraped inside LITTLE BLUES closed fist.

Location Recce

Location Details

Our location is set at Rachel’s room. We thought it would be better to shoot in an actual bedroom rather than using the green room. We will be panning across her room to show elements of our character and our genre, our genre is fantasy/children story so we wanted to show this aspect with our use of props and location.

Possible problems
Possible problems are that the room is too spacious and we may not have enough props to fill her room. Secondly because is older we are afraid her room may be too mature as to what kind of age we were going for.

Risks assessments
Time taken to film. When using natural lighting will change throughout the day (continuity).

Character Profiles

'Little Blue'

Little Blue is our main character in the story, she is only known as Little Blue though out the film to keep to a fairy tale theme, we decided this while studying story's like Red Riding Hood.
However, if we were to name her we would call her Lucy Mills, simply because we felt it suited our image of her

Little Blue was born to love, she easily feels other peoples sadness and can empathise. She does all she can to change it and them cheer up.

She's 10 years old

Storyboard and Photo storyboard

Storyboard re-draft

After feedback from the class we chose to redraft our storyboard following it. The comments we got were that the first frame of a black screen should be changed to blue, to suit the story theme.
In addition that we should show more shots of tracking into the room to make the movement clearer.
And finally the camera shot of the picture frame should be broken into two shots, one zooming onto the 3 family members, then paning across to the step sister.

7. Looking back at the your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product.

Preliminary task was set to train us as what we would expect in the main task like firstly looking for location, getting cast, props costume etc. The prelim task was a stepping stone and a learning process here we learnt a lot like continuity, cut away, action reaction, off shoulder, 180 degree and many more. The prelim task we came up with a simple storyline but used all these different elements. Our one was a character waiting on another character. It was difficult as it was our first time but also successful because every mistake we learnt from it so we would not do this is in our main task. In the prelim because we learnt so many new things we learnt how to use continuity in how main task when we are panning and other aspects like cut away and many more.

Firstly location in our prelim task was extremely difficult because we didn’t know what location we could use because we only had a day. Many difficulties with this because we set our location in a public place, so we had a lot of students going back and fourth so we had to keep stopping and starting. So from this in our main task we took time to find our location which would not affect our opening. Our one was set in a bedroom this was successful because we had no students interrupting having start and stop all the time which really helped us. We also learnt from our prelim task that if we shot our opening in a public place it was less likely that student would not walk past.

Another element I learnt from the prelim task was the weather if I was shooting outside and it was sunny then during the day it became rainy that would affect my continuity so me and my group made sure we set a our main task in an area where the weather would not affect us.

Thirdly finding cast members in our prelim task was not difficult because we were given cast but the difficult part is making sure your cast do exactly what you want hem to. In our prelim our main issue was that we never acted out to our cast how we wanted them to act we simply just let them do it their own way, which affected us slightly because we did not get exactly what we wanted form them. This helped in our main task so I knew that in order for me to get exactly what I want from them I would have to act it our so they know what to do.
Another aspect we learnt was sound, during our prelim task we didn’t acknowledge how important sound was so we had many unwanted sound like dialogue and because it was in a public place we had footsteps etc. This definitely helped in our main task because I could inform the group on sound being made and how we could make sure unwanted sound did not occur.

The prelim task was not known to a lot of us especially because many of us had not filmed before so we didn’t know what minor things would be helpful to us. In our prelim task we had no props or costume so it didn’t really make our film as real as it could’ve for example we didn’t have a watch so one character used her hand to symbolize the watch but it was not real and looked very cheesy. So for our main task we planned out our props and costume so our film was more believable and attractive we had teddies pens books etc made sure we had props that were fairy tale like.
In doing this task I feel I have learnt slot and progressed with using old skills but perfecting them and making them look sharp and updated with our location sound etc. I definitely developed skills from the prelim task it helped in many ways from learning from our mistake and perfecting them.

With the prelim task was a lesson used to show us what to expect in the real task from the prelim task we learnt how to use story boards, continuity sheets, using the clipper board etc. So when it came to our main task we developed our skills so nothing seemed extremely difficult because we had been trained already. The prelim task helped us with group work how share out different roles. We knew what hazards could occur from our location recee. The prelim task was definately helpful and useful. We over came problems, worked well as a group and gained some camera techniques. The prelim task prepared us and made us organized

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Over the whole film process I have learnt a lot about the technology used to help make and develop our film.
We used a canon xh1 camera which was definitely useful; the quality of camera was excellent. Everything we need was placed o the camera with the pause, play, panning, tracking and stop we had all the initials. We had tripods which helped with the spirit levels so the camera person was comfortable and didn’t struggle. We were able to move about with the camera and get solid shots.

Here I will give a step by step process on what exactly the camera did for us. Firstly due to the tracking we were able to track through the door and make that shot look real and magical which is the effect we wanted to get. Now because we had the tracking we could go according any pace we wanted to go to, which was really helpful for us because we mange to get this shot exactly how we wanted.
Another positive thing about the camera is that we were able to pan, now panning was the most important element in our film because most of shots we wanted to pan from prop to prop like showing the fairytale books then teddy etc, so because of how flexible the camera is we were able to do so.

Thirdly we were able to get zooms in which is what we needed for when we showing the props, photo frame. This was also important to us because without this zoom our film would not have been clear but we were successful in getting this zoom.
The camera did another excellent job and that was allowing us to get practice shots, now because we could pause and stop we could practice before filming which was really essential to us because we had some difficulties in getting some shots but after a number of practicing we were able to get it.
The camera got us many high angle shots of the props, it also gave us low angle shots. Just due the camera me and my group were very successful in getting all how shots correctly.

Another technology equipment we used was sound which was useful the sound is long it was not seen in our shots, it stayed hidden which was something we were worries about because we had mirrors but because we were able to move the sound about it did not affect our group.

We managed to get some sounds from the merry go round which is the sound we wanted to use to hopefully create a fairytale like sound. Although the mic caught a lot of creeks and picked up a number of sounds we then decided to use a non diegetic sound which could be played throughout our film. We also wanted sound which would attract our target audience more.

The film process was a long stressful period because we had minor issues, the camera was too dark but because the camera person had been taught to use the camera we were able to change the settings and brighten up our shots more. Another problem we faced was sound because we had planned to use the merry go round the other sounds that the camera was picking up made it difficult to be heard but we overcame this because we already had in mind what other sound we could use like the non diegetic sound we found previously. Thirdly a problem that occurred were that some shots we planned to do were too difficult due to lack of space or camera problems but because the canon xh1 is excellent we could simply pause or stop and then practice our shot until it was perfect. So we eventually overcame all our problems it was long but it was done.
Editing was the last element of technology we used to cut, add and use special effects and get our perfect opening.

I will again give a step by step process on how useful editing was to me and my group. We had taken a number of shots so we were firstly able to pick out the best shots for our opening, we could view what shots we needed and what ones we didn’t. We were then able to put all our shots in place of the order we wanted and through this we could cut out any long scenes, e.g. our first shot is the ceiling because the shot was too long we managed to narrow the shot down which was very useful so we did this with may of our shots.

Now that our opening was in order we needed to make its exactly how we wanted, s we added more lighting to brighten up our shots this was mainly useful for the last shot where we had flowers lighting up and the lighting worked effectively.
Now we had got an idea from Edward scissor hand which we wanted to use and that was dissolves so from shot to shot we wanted dissolves. We were able to get this effect where from the doll house it dissolves to the books then colors it was really good and made our opening even more successful because we added the effects we wanted. We could also give our opening a slow pace which was another effect we used where we slowed down our sequence and made it flow this was to avoid fast pace and keep our audience focus.

Now we needed our sound placed onto our film now as I said before we had in mind what we were going to use so it was already stored on our usbs so we copied it to adobe premiere and our music was attached. We did come across some problems; the music wasn’t playing although it was attached so we had keeping copying and deleting but eventually the music started working and went nicely with our opening.
Lastly we had to include titles so we each did some practice titles on what we felt would be good, after many feedback from our class members we managed to get an appropriate title which went nicely with our opening and would definitely attract our audience as we used a typical fantasy title.

Through editing I learnt a lot during this process considering the fact that I had difficulties with editing before hand. In the past I had know knowledge in editing I didn’t know how to step up I had no clue what so ever on how to use adobe premiere. Members in my group know how to edit so I slowly became aware of how use this where to put where etc so now I able to step up the equipment for editing e.g. plugging lead into computer and adding the camera. I learnt how to edit I am not the best but have improved as how to group shots cut out shots etc which is something I happy I accomplished because it was aspect I was dreading because I found it the most difficult but s they say practice makes perfect.

Through this whole process I learnt a lot about camera movements and shots which I never knew before like panning and tracking. Editing was one of my weakest points and I managed to learn how to use and develop my skills even more I know in future if asked to edit I will not have a problem. Now due to the technologies we used our film was successful.

My role was to use the sound equipment, here I definitely learnt how to use sound because before hand I had practiced and researched how to use sound equipment. My role was important because I could inform my group on the sound being picked up like creeks on the floor, speech between members in m group etc. My knowledge in this has progressed because I know how to use sound and how important sound can be to a film and reasons why its used. Through sound I learnt how to edit sound and ad sound.
Lastly I learnt many health and safety issues like packing away camera when finished this is so no hazards occur, we also learnt not to leave wires around like the xlr lead which could also be hazardous.

Evaluation5

5. How did you attract/address your audience?
Our genre is fantasy so to appeal to our audience we had to make sure we gave aspects of fantasy to attract our audience. We made sure that we gave the audience what they expect even though we challenged some codes of convention we made sure it was very fantasy like. We know what expectations our audience want it’s just about how we convey them and keep them engaged.

Our film is fantasy so our audience expect there to be magic, so we have the magical door opening and introducing them to a child like room this is because we have a primary audience. We wanted our opening to adventurous and magical as possible. The setting was modern so our audience could relate to it more. Also the way our setting was laid out showing each aspect of our characters persona with the bedroom use of props etc

We also wanted to keep them in suspense when we zoomed into the stepsister so that our audience is familiar with villain, and as we all know in modern fantasy movies there is always a villain so the audience familiarize with this more. It then dissolved into flower lighting which keeps are audience in suspense as to why we did that and what her character may be?

In doing this we wanted to create wonder and tension with just that photo as it gives clues as to what our film is about, this is like Alice in wonderland where there is a lot to speculate and keep in audience engaged which is what we wanted to use in our opening. We felt this went well as people straight away got the concept of the film when the photo was seen. We had much feedback from our class and straight away they knew it was a fantasy genre which helped after many editing. Many of them wanted to know what will happen why there is family conflict cruelty etc.
We definitely wanted many aspects of our film to be relatable so we made it magical and typical so we attract our target audience so gave them exactly what they would expect with little twist like not using narration so we keep them in suspense etc. We used child like props which you see in our opening with the characters bag and doll house and because our audience are young they get an understanding more.
We also made sure there was a moral in our film not to be jealous and envious as you would get in fantasy movies socialising children into not following a villain footsteps as they always get punished for their actions, you get this in fantasy movies like Little red riding hood where children know to not follow the wolf and his behaviors’. We also got this idea from Edward scissor hand where the boyfriend was jealous of Edward and wanted wicked things to happen to Edward and as a result he ended up dying so we have some aspects where our target learn from this. We made sure our opening followed these conventions.

Another area where we attracted our audience is that we used family life to relate to our audience to engage with our opening more. We used high key lighting to make our opening more fairytale like and very magical. A camera technique we used was that we were constantly panning from left to right so we show the audience different child like props like the books and fairytale this is a technique used in Edward scissor hand where they panned and dissolved each of the makings of him.
We attracted and addresses the audience in the right way through lots of research giving them exactly what they expect and because of this I think we was successful through feedback and following guidance of research. Making sure we gave different elements you would find in a fantasy movie with the use of props, set layout lighting and many more.

Evaluation4

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
We have a primary audience who would be interested in our film. The audience who would watch our film is young children aged 6-13 females and males but mainly targeted at young females. This is due to the fact our protagonist is a young female and 6/10 fantasy movie use young children, this makes our opening more appealing for example in the chronicles of Narnia young children are used.
Our audience would be people young children who love fantasy movies who read a lot of fairytales stories etc. This story would relate to them because it’s an everyday thing family brother sisters parents etc so they engage with these types of films more. There are lot fantasy movie which have these typical themes as our one do so they relate to it more. Fantasy genre films appeal more to young children because its more believable to them and young children are intrigued by fantasy films. For young children they do not expect a lot as long as it is a typical fantasy theme, where as older audience may find it childish or unrealistic.
From when we started our film we aimed it at young children fantasy/children’s story because it relates to many fairytales such little red riding hood, Cinderella etc.
To stick with a fantasy genre we had many versions of little blue we had so many feedbacks to help improve our film. We made sure story appealed to young children it wasn’t too serious and we give young children what they want.
Over time we changed and evaluated our film many times after much feedback we got i.e.
Telling the story to quick
Not really appealing to young children
Using more of a drama genre
So because of this we did research on how to attract your chosen audience we learnt new tactics in ways our audience will enjoy our film make it more appropriate for them. We gave the audience what they see in popular fantasy films. We also made changes to our story board by taking out some shots and adding new ones. For example we changed our ending; before it was too serious we made it more appealing by just showing the photo frame and leaving a cliff hanger.
Films our audience may choose to watch are
Nativity

Night at the museum

Christmas carol

Planet 51

Alien vs. monsters

Ice age 3

Harry potter

Alice in wonderland
The Chronicles of Narnia
Wizard of oz
Labyrinth

Pirates of the Caribbean films

Stardust

Spirited Away

Twilight

Underworld

Each film contains elements of magic mystery adventures which we would expect our type of audience to enjoy as it has typical fantasy themes.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

After your film has been completed with all the editing and titles etc, the question is how we can get our film distributed.
Now as we all know distributors is there to promote films to producers then viewers. Distributors uphold your film in ways you couldn’t like on buses, billboards DVDs etc. That is their job in selling our film.
Now due to the fact that it is made in school it is highly unlikely that our film will be distributed on posters, trailers. So we need to stick with something that isn’t too much hassle and cam help distribute your film.

There are a number of ways in which we could promote our film from media institutions from twitter to bebo but most popular one is face book or YouTube, with these there is a possibility that your film could be distributed and seen by a large amount of people. Another reason is that these two are the most used websites which gives your film more of a chance of being watched and promoted and if you’re lucky seen by a producer.

Face book has a large amount of people who use it; you have people from all over the world which use this site. So how can this help us? Well for one we post it on our page many people can then give commentary such as critiques, complimentary everything useful to us. Secondly users can become fans of our film and once a large amount of people become fans it becomes popular and attracts other people into watching our film. So through face book we can get commentary, fans and people to join our group all this over a film. This way is easier accessible to people and affordable because there is no payment in distributing our films.

Secondly YouTube is another source we can distribute our film to a large audience. Another positive aspect about this is that it can be spread people copy link and post it round which is really useful to us because we can have mini distributors with no fuss. YouTube is similar to face book because you are guaranteed to get comments whether they are good or bad.

An example of a distributor is film movement where they help independent film makers promote their film. One positive aspect about their distributor is that they don’t believe in marketising your film just for money but instead we are the boss’s of our films and say whether we want certain things used.

Another distributor is film marketing services

Distributors play an important role in advertising your film, they create enthusiasm for films. They do various screening which helps popularise your film. They create large audiences, getting lots of commentary and this is possible through festivals. Here we can show screening to different types of audiences where we have test screening, critique screenings and many more this is so we get feedback on our films and what changes we can add before showing it to viewers.

So there are a number of ways in which distributors up hold our films. They can marketize your film in many different ways and there are many of them which are now available to us.

Evaluation2

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Our opening focuses on a particular type of social group this through the type genre, setting and character. This includes props, music, setting and character.
The protagonist in our film is ‘’Little Blue’’
Little blue is a young girl aged 8 who is obsessed with fairytales books and spends most of her time reading, drawing and playing with her dolls, you see a lot of these aspects in our opening with the different props we used to represent her character. She’s a little girl in her own bubble very creative and artistic. She is warm hearted loving and caring and expects people around her to be the same, but as her stepsister is envious and cruel towards her she feels rejected and not loved by her wicked stepsister her character is similar to Cinderella’s stepsisters as they are envious of her, therefore this character is very relatable. She only wishes her sister could play the typical older sister who plays that perfect sisterly role model who protects and loves her. This is why little blue is always in her bubble and trying to live in her imaginative fairytale life. You see this in her room with her fairytale books and doll house, drawings, princess dress she wishes she had that lifestyle of a princess in a fairytale. You get a sense of character when shown in the photo that she is a bubbly loveable young girl we see as she is smiling and in her own world she is just a happy child. This is similar to Matilda who confides in her fairytale books as she is rejected by her family. Matilda and Little blue are similar because all the want to is loved and have that sense of belonging. Little blue’s character represents a lot of young girls who are interested in fairytales and share the same interest. We used little blue to convey a message in the story that we should care for one another.
Other social groups shown in our film is little blue’s parents. They are shown in the photo as loving parents as they are smiling and seem happy very typical happy family. Their character relates to the parents in spirited away parents so wrapped up in playing happy family they are unaware their daughter goes missing. They are also unaware that there is sibling rivalry happening between their children and because they are unaware it will continue. The parents assuming that they family is a perfect nuclear family, yet there lies a lot of hatred and sorrow within the family. This is similar to the character in Lanbriyth the little girl and her father do not get along but her mother is unaware and assumes everything is okay but in their household they show a smile to the mother but really they do not along.
Initially we didn’t have trouble finding cast because we already had in mind who we wanted to play little blue’s character. We were also able to get our cast members real parents to be in the frame so it looked real and believable. Our last cast member who was also in the photo played the stepsister was also good because of the use of costume and facial expression she really pulled her character of well.
As a group I feel we directed our cast member to the best of our ability. We acted out what we expected her to do be child like. In a few she shots our cast member struggled but after a few she progressed, another reason why we felt she progressed fast was because it was not difficult and we made it less complicated for her. In addition to this it went smoothly simply because she fit the description our little blue she was short skinny cute everything we was looking for. The costume we gave her helped as well with the hello kitty bag the cute blue jacket which really emphasized on her character more.

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our Opening sequence is based around many opening sequences we researched, as well as this we also developed and challenged it. Little Blue is based around a fantasy genre it has aspects of magic, the evil step sister the Good Samaritan etc. Our open sequence used some convections of our researched genre like
Spirited away
Cinderella
Jack and the bean stalk
Edward scissor hand
Enchanted
Lanbriyth
Little red riding hood
Night of the museum
Matilda
Harry potter
Jumaji
We researched many types of fantasy movies which could help with our stimulus. We used some convection from these films because we felt the audience will engage with our opening more as it would be recognisable and the ‘’typical’’. Each of these fantasy movies each helped us with our opening they way started or the theme of the movie and different techniques they used. With each movie it helped us expand on our characters and what types of props and costumes can be used. Each movie helped any sound we could use to make it a fantasy genre. What type of audience and what type of fantasy?
We managed to chop up all the researched openings and make it into our own being based on them but different. Our opening has similar aspects as a fantasy genre would for example
We had a fantasy typical soundtrack played throughout
We introduce the character’s persona
We give the audience a sense of place
We give hints about what may happen
Fantasy like titles
The themes used in our film

Our group wanted to make sure we had hints of fantasy in our opening whether it was the music prop or costume. The theme of our film comes under
Jealousy
Sibling rivalry
Envy
Neglection
Hatred
Anger

Our film is based around these different themes, it is mainly focused around jealousy sibling rivalry and neglection and we make this obvious in our opening it is shown in the picture where we have the mum and dad and daughter close and happy together, then we have the stepsister looking upset and distant and from this you get a sign that maybe there’s a form of neglection and jealousy.

These films are typical in a fantasy genre and we wanted to make it obvious that the stepsister felt out the family we got this idea from Cinderella where this film constantly shows that Cinderella is left out. We did this with our opening using the picture to show this. Jealousy is another theme that we use where the stepsister is jealous of her sister because she feels she is more cared about; just like in Cinderella they are jealous because they feel she is prettier than them. Our group felt these were the obvious themes you find in a fantasy genre.

Our opening starts of very suttle and the audience probably feel something positive may happen because we have establishing shot of teddies and colours and books,

This isn’t really common in fantasy films because they start of confusing us before we fully understand the concept, but instead we chose to tell the story. From here the audience will realise the story is to do with jealousy envy and sibling rivalry so they know what is expected or what may happen.

Our film challenges most typical fantasy genre because you would expect the stepsister to be the victim, when actually its the sister that receives the most attention from her parents. The stepsister is jealous of her younger sister, she treats the sister badly and bullies her in front of friends but Little blue’s parents are unaware. So when the audience see the picture they automatically feel sorry for her but little did they know that pictures can be deceiving. When the picture appear we zoom into the stepsister so we keep the focus on her hopefully to get the audience think twice about feeling sorry for her. By showing the picture we wanted to audience to know that the stepsister distanced herself from the family and that her facial expression should show that she is a jealous of her sister. We still wanted to stick with some conventions of fantasy movies by showing there’s always the good Samaritan ‘’Little blue’’ and the villain ‘’Stepsister’’ The audience would assume its the other way round but as the film goes on you see the real side of each character and picture cannot tell ones personality. We got this theme from Matilda where when she is first born the audience would assume she will be loved because the opening is a happy mood but as the movie goes on you find she is a victim.

People assume Matilda will be loved up and taken care of but she has to do that for herself which is not what we expected.

Similar to this is Harry potter where we expect him to be taken care of but instead he is pushed to the side. We would assume he would be taken care of because he has magic and maybe his family may appreciate that but instead disown him.

Another way in which we challenged conventions is that we didn’t make the protagonist obvious at the beginning we gave hints about character but wanted to keep the focus on all the different teddies colours etc to build up tension and get a sense of character before introducing her, where as in other fantasy movies we straight away know who the protagonist is.

Lastly we challenged conventions we are related with fantasy genre is that we didn’t use a voice over which you normally find in a fantasy movie where some one narrates what will happen.
For example Stardust was opening we used they have the voice over of a man narrating the movie; we didn’t use this as although it’s typical in most fantasy openings. We didn’t use the typical props or lighting to insinuate to the audience that this is a fantasy instead we wanted to give the audience sense of character, place.

Our opening sequence follows a typical fantasy movie with a magical door opening leading us into a magical world, we have child like props in the room. We have a doll house fantasy books, teddies and colorful pens. It starts of with a happy mood everything is related to a child and everything a child would want. We followed a typical technique that a modern fantasy movie would use where you want to be part of the protagonist lifestyle/film. Throughout our opening sequence we are giving sense of character, when little blue steps in collecting her bag we get a sense she is a innocent little girl in her own world, this is in most fantasy movie where the protagonist is never a bad person. As the camera pans to the next shot you see a family and little blue she seems very happy innocent and warm hearted but as it moves across we see the stepsister from here she seems unhappy angry and distant we already get a sense of what is happening or what may happen and that the stepsister is the villain as you would see in most fantasy films and we are always told who is the goody and who is the bady in the opening of most films.
Our open sequence uses various techniques you would find in a modernized fantasy film. We have the typical fantasy soundtrack played throughout to show mystery and wonder, the music helps to convey to the audience that we are leading them somewhere. We used dissolves to pan across every aspect shown in opening to give a sense of character and lifestyle. We use this to create the idea that the character may be spoiled and living in a fairytale like life. Each scene flowed into each other everything was done slow and calm and peaceful to show this character is a happy loving child.
